Football Clubs in Dehradun
Dehradun is home to over two dozen football clubs. The Vijay Cantt Sporting Club is the oldest. The club was established in the name of Vijay Khatri. It was a noble move to pay tribute to a famous goalkeeper of his time. Incidentally, Vijay Khatri died at a young age. He was the first goalkeeper of the club. The club made its humble beginning in the 40s. Earlier, it was known as Cantt Sports Club. In February 1950, the name of Cantt Sports Club was changed to Vijay Cantt Sporting Football Club.
Akranta Club and DMK are the two new clubs that have made impressive progress in the recent times. Akranta lifted the league title in 2004 and 2007. DMK clinched the Dehradun Football League in 2006. In 2005, Uttarakhand Police annexed the title. The cops repeated the feat this year.
