Shyam Thapa-Lifetime achievement award, Jatin Bisht-footballer of the year
The District Football Association has adjudged current India and East Bengal mid-fielder Jatin Singh Bisht the Best Footballer from Doon for the year 2005. The award will be presented to him at a function to be held here on 30 January. Jatin is a product of the Sports College and is considered one of finest mid-fielders of India at the present time. Hailing from Pauri district, he is a presently playing for country's top club, East Bengal.
The DFA has decided to host an annual award function from this year on to honour footballers. The award will be presented in four categories: Best footballer of the year, lifetime achievement, outstanding contribution and most promising player.
Shyam Thapa, legendary Indian footballer, will receive the lifetime achievement award. Incidentally, Thapa studied at the local Gorkha Military School and holds the unique distinction of being member of Dehradun teams with most big wins registered at the national level. He was a member of the Durand Cup winning Gorkha Brigade in 1966 and '69. He was also a member of the victorious, and also runner up sides of the Gorkha Military School at the Subroto Cup.
Bhupender Rawat, Ranjit Thapa, Bir Bahadur, Ram Bahadur (Late), CB Thapa, Matbar Aswal and Nar Singh Gurung will receive the awards for outstanding contribution to football.
Bhupender Rawat too is a proud alumnus of the Gorkha School and holds the record for scoring the highest number of goals in one edition of the Durand Cup. Rawat created this record in the 1966 Durand Cup.
Devender Bisht, Secretary DFA, said, "This is the first ever football award function in Dehradun. We are making this small effort to recognize the efforts made by people like Shyam Thapa, Ram Bahadur, Bir Bahadur, Amar Bahadur for making the Doon valley a respectable name in Indian football. Our aim is to host such functions annually."
Among the recipients of the most promising players awards are Nitin Chaudhary and Sunil Yadav who represented India in the Asian Under-17 qualifier in New Delhi last year. Besides this the Uttaranchal under-14 that won the National School Games soccer Gold at Sonipat (Haryana) in 2005 has been included.
The list of most promising player includes: Nitin Chaudhary, Sunil Yadav, Saurav Rawat, Firoz Ahmed, Shahid Ahmed, Bhupender Bora, Shiv Shanker Bhatt, Ankit Shrivastav, Manish Khattri, Naveen Cheetri, Deepak Pandey, Jagdish Kashniyal, Pankaj Joshi, Shanker Dobhal, Dinesh Negi, Jaiveer Rawat, Rohit Negi, Gaurav Sharma, Nikhil Regmi, Natwar Bisht, Sankar Bisht, Mukesh Nautiyal and Abhilash Sharma.
